Thinking Green
The Green Museums Initiative
Things You Can
Do Today
"The first step
in sustainability is
learning to think green."

We don’t change our ways overnight. We begin the goal of becoming
sustainable with thoughtfulness and by asking the right questions. We think
our way through.

Living and working green begins with how we look at the world around us,
at our work and the impact we are making. Thinking green inspires us to be
better citizens, better neighbors, and better leaders. And each of us
regardless of job titles can be a leader in this task.

Sustainability starts with the questions we ask ourselves: How do we choose
to live and work? What will we leave behind? How does what we do affect
our community, our neighborhood, our families and on our planet?

Then, ask some practical questions: Do we need this? Where did this come
from and how was it produced? Is there a more sustainable product? How
can we accomplish this goal in a more sustainable way?

The first step in sustainability is free: Learning to think green!

Why is it important to become green?

Our actions today affect people we’ve never met, places we’ll never see.
Like the global economy, we are all inextricably linked.  Now, more than
ever social responsibility and environmental intelligence beckons us to
stand up and do our part.

Museums are resource intensive.  Collectively, museums of all sizes and
disciplines, 1300 + strong in California, can make a whopping impact in
support of our environment by becoming sustainable through green
practices.

How do we become greener?

We encourage you to join the Green Museum Accord. Communicate with
colleagues and share solutions. Ask questions.  Think through programs,
events, energy use, supplies and even vendor agreements--  one step at a
time to adopt the best green practices.

What should be our goal?

To become completely sustainable.
  • Think Green. Think through
    practices and incorporate green
    into your plan.

  • Ask how can we become more
    sustainable in our practices and
life at the museum? What can
we do now? What can we do in
    the long term?

  • Decide to make healthier
choices in practices as well as
    products and services.

  • Believe you can make a
difference in the life of your
    team, your museum, the
    community and for the earth.

  • Dare to have a vision.

  • Work daily to implement your
    green vision.

  • Be social. Participate.
    Collaborate. Include others in
    your green work.

  • Share. Be generous with your
    knowledge.

  • Tell your story to colleagues,
    the press and most importantly
    your community.

  • Be a leader. Be an example.

  • Make the green commitment.
