The Green Museums Initiative examines the role of museums and
sustainability as a practice that cross-pollinates efforts between programs,
services, operations and facilities. As this network continues to grow, new
stories of museums that have become more sustainable organizations will
be posted here.
Learn more about special initiatives launched by other museum
associations that target specific issues or areas of interest:
- the Association of Science and Technology Center is raising awareness
about global warming and ways the polar regions profoundly influence
Earth's climate, ecosystems, and human society; - the American Association of Museums is establishing a professional
interest committee on green museums and took steps to green their
conference this year; - the Association of Zoos and Aquariums hosts a resource center on their
website on how to create a Green Team and has incorporated
conservation interpretive messages and resource management in its
accreditation standards; - a Working Group on Museums and Sustainable Communities is active in
Canada; and - the National Trust for Historic Preservation and its partners are
advocating for the continued use and sustainable restoration of older
buildings to conserve materials and energy and prevent the
environmental, social, and economic impacts of demolition. - The Museums Association U.K. has initiated an active dialogue and
discussion to encourage museums to think about sustainability.
