"Our museum has pledged to uphold the Green Museums Accord."
Adopt Green Practices, Sign-on to the Accord!
Institutions across the country are pledging their support for a sustainable future for museums. We invite you to be one of them!
The Green Museums Accord is a non-legally binding commitment to sustainable practices: an institution-wide pledge to begin greening your museum.
What is the benefit of signing the Green Museums Accord? A pledge certificate will be sent to each museum that adopts the Accord. And your museum has carte blanche to list the Accord in your promotional materials, such as “this museum is part of the Green Museums Accord”, as long as your membership is current. We want you to communicate your museum's environmental commitment to your visitors and inform them of the good work you are doing to help the environment.
The Green Museums Accord consists of the following five principles:
1. Publicly declare participation in greening your institution as part of the Green Museums Accord.
2. Undertake programs to educate your colleagues, board, visitors, vendors, and other stakeholders about sustainability and sustainable museum practices.
3. Initiate a dialogue with your colleagues and other project team members about the environmental impact and sustainable alternatives on every major project. Carefully consider any new external contracts, and try to favor environmentally responsible vendors and work processes.
4. Begin looking at your museum's ecological footprint, and pledge to work towards measurable reductions.
5. Advance the understanding of environmental issues from a museum’s perspective by contributing actively to the communal knowledge base in this area.
Your museum’s participation in the Green Museums Accord requires the endorsement of your museum CEO or Executive Director, or it could be a board resolution. Any employee can sign-up for the Accord, with the endorsement of the leadership, by completing the form on the left hand side of this page.
Pledge renewal is required every two years.
Participation in the Green Museums Accord is not tied to CAM membership, nor is it limited to California museums. If you are a museum outside of California we encourage you to join the Green Museums Accord.
The Green Museums Accord is not legally binding, but a pledge. The only organization that is going to monitor adherence to the Accord is your own. However, we hope you will keep the Green Museums Initiative apprised of the specifics you are undertaking to uphold the Accord. In the spirit of principle 5, share your experiences and information and help us build a rich and vibrant green museum resource.
